HUGE PRICE DROP!! Was ?1000, now ?800
If you can see this advert, it means the item is still for sale.
1950s or \'60s double bass of Eastern European origin. It is of plywood construction. The playing scale is a standard length of 42\".
New cover and a good French pattern bow included in the sale.
I would call this a large-bodied 3/4 size bass, which makes for a pretty big-sounding instrument. I have used it for jazz, both amplified and unamplified, and it now plays very well thanks to the time and expense put into it over the last few years.
Fortunately it has a very comfortable, shallow neck, so smaller hands are not struggling to play this bass. The neck has never been broken and the neck joint has never been unseated.
It has its original, faux-ivory tuning keys (see pic) that are very comfortable on the hands and look great. They are made of some sort of plastic and in very good condition. These can go brittle, but there\'s absolutely no sign of that here. Quite unusual -- I\'ve only owned two basses over the years with this type of tuner fitted. They are in good condition and turn nicely, with no signs of wear.
It bows well.
The instrument has been fully overhauled and improved, with a new bridge, soundpost, top nut and endpin assembly. All properly carved and fitted by my luthier.
The fingerboard has been \'shot\' (reshaped and dressed to eliminate string buzzes and aid efficient playing). It is light in colour, but I decided not to have it stained, as I liked the natural look. You could choose to make it black if you wish.
All these improvements are required to any older bass that\'s being recommissioned, but also it\'s worth saying that new \'off the shelf\' basses, whether bought online or from a high street music shop, will need all of the improvements I\'ve listed above.
If the improvements have been done by the shop (this is very unusual these days) the price they charge will reflect that work and expense. If not, then you will have to contact a luthier and have this work done for yourself. Suddenly that ?500 or even ?1000 bass isn\'t looking like such a bargain.
This is a professionally owned bass and has been played by me a fair bit over the last few years, mostly at Gleneagles hotel, The former Royal Yacht Britannia, and similar venues. I like it very much and would rather hang on to it, but needs must. I have five other double basses, including a restoration project that I\'d like to turn my attention to, so I\'m putting a few instruments up for sale over the next few days and weeks. Keep an eye on my other items for sale.
I have just restrung this bass with a new set of Thomastik Spirocore strings (light tension) and it\'s sounding very robust. These cost ?140 and are top quality professional string, good for pizzicato and arco playing.
I have the set of gut strings that were on it before (my usual choice of string) if anyone prefers the old school feel and sound.
Included in the sale are a new cover and a French shape bow and some rosin.
I\'m happy for anyone to come and check out this instrument and give it a play. As you will be aware, we have some stricter Covid 19 rules in place at the moment, but please get in touch and we\'ll see what can be achieved within the Scottish Govt. rules.
String bass, upright bass, bass violin, bass fiddle, stand up bass, doublebass
